Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all they getting get understanding Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)
Not too long ago, I was checking out of a general store, and handed the cashier a twenty-dollar bill to cover the cost of my items. The cashier accidently typed twenty-cents instead. She attempted to calculate the change herself but handed me an incorrect amount. I then corrected her and wanted to explain, but realized - when she handed me the rest of the money I was owed - she simply wanted to move on to the next customer.
From her standpoint, that was a wise move. The line was backed up, she needed to get it flowing again. So she simply gave me the money and focused on her next customer. However, she did not take the time to gain understaning. So when or if this happens again, she would not shortchange her customer or the customer would not convince her to give him or her more than what is due.
So what is wisdom anyway? Wisdom is the power of right judgement - the ability to choose the correct solution for any situation. What is understanding? Understanding is the capacity to apprehend the actual faults or merits of a thing - to grasp a situation for what it actually is. Therefore, when we have understanding (comprehension of the real issue), we can then apply correct wisdom (the solution to the problem).
Today let us seek not only wisdom but also understanding. James 1:5 lets us know if we lack wisdom, we need only to ask God, and He will give us wisdom. Let us ask God for wisdom today, and with all the wisdom we get - let us also get understanding.
