Each one should test their own
actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing
themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Galatians 6:4-5 (NIV)
One of the most challenging habits for us
Christians to break is comparing ourselves to others. When we compare
ourselves to others, we define ourselves by someone else’s troubles or
triumphs, and whether we are aware of it or not – it causes us turmoil.
One moment we’re up – because someone is facing a hardship and compared to them
– we’re blessed. The next moment, we’re down – because someone has it all
together and compared to them – we’re not measuring up.
If we stop comparing ourselves to others, and
focus on being the best we can be – we’ll find the peace that comes from being
ourselves, free from any need for comparing. In other words, we can “take
pride in [ourselves] alone”. This
pride isn’t the arrogance that promotes a condescending attitude or haughty
spirit found in Proverbs 16:18.
This pride is the confidence that promotes an inspiring attitude and an
encouraging spirit. It is as if
you are saying to yourself – job well done!
Today let us test our actions according to
the Word of God. If we are doing
what the Word says for us to do – we pass. If we are not, let us put into practice the Word we are
failing to do and strive for that passing grade.
