Instead,
speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature
body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:15
The apostle
Paul reveals to us the key to growing spiritually, which is speaking the truth
in love. Now I would venture to
say that many of us do speak the truth, but how much of it is done in
love? This doesn’t mean we are to sugarcoat the truth or speak part of it to spare feelings. Instead, we should speak against lies by not being afraid to say what is right. We should also understand that there is a
fine line between us speaking to defend the truth out of love for God
or someone else, and us knowing we are right and just want to speak to win an argument.
When
we speak the truth, the whole truth, in love we “will grow to become in every
respect the mature body of… Christ”.
So, when we got love in speaking truth, we mature. And with maturity comes our acceptance
of the truth when we hear it. With
maturity comes awareness and discernment when someone attempts to mix truth
with lies, even when that someone is ourselves. With maturity also
comes discipline in actively pursuing the truth and living in it.
Today let us speak truth in
love. Let us put away our childish things
(1 Corinthians 13:11) of wanting to get our way and the last word, or using the truth to hurt
one another. Instead let us use
the truth to grow.
